Green's Bar (Kinvara)
Greens Pub was originally opened in 1865 as both a public house and a grocery shop – this was very common in the 19th and early 20th centuries in Ireland. In the 19th century Kinvara was a busy port exporting timber to England, and grain to the distilleries and breweries in Dublin along with the importation of turf from Connemara and other goods from the city of Galway. As Green’s Bar is facing the harbour, the port would have been a main stay of the business for the pub and grocery shop. Further business would be provided by farmers from the surrounding area, coming to town to sell their produce and stock up on goods.
In 1980, the grocery shop was closed as it could no longer compete with the large scale supermarkets. But today Green’s Bar continues to thrive, particularly with the huge growth in tourist traffic through Kinvara. Green’s Pub has always remained popular with the locals, and visitors are also finding out why.
Drinking habits have changed down through the years. Irish drinkers today drink less whiskey and more beer than a century ago. But there is a discernible shift back toward whiskey again, with a phenomenal increase in the number of small craft distilleries now opening around Ireland. Green’s Pub has always specialised in whiskeys and today offers the largest choice of Irish Whiskeys available, together with a great range of other whiskeys and spirits from around the world.
